Palmdale will conduct its sixth “Season of Service” event tomorrow as part of Global Youth Service Day from 8 a.m. to noon at Avenue R-8 and 43rd Street East (next to Mesquite Elementary School). Register at 8 a.m. and be ready for work by 8:30 a.m. The day will consist of  a desert clean-up.

“We’re encouraging youth and the young at heart to join youth around the world in celebrating International Global Youth Service Day by giving back to their community,” said Trish Jones, Palmdale community services supervisor. “We’re going to clean up an area of the desert next to one of our elementary schools for our project.”

Volunteers under age 16 must be accompanied by a parent or adult guardian. Participants must complete a Release of Liability waiver available at www.cityofpalmdale.org or at event registration. Organizers advise volunteers to wear comfortable, close-toed shoes and be prepared to walk over uneven terrain. Bring along work gloves, sun screen and, if possible, a wide-brim hat. Water will be provided.

The next service event, Stamp Out Hunger, will take place on Saturday, May 13 in partnership with the United States Postal Service. A second Stamp Out Hunger event will take the following Saturday.

Both events will meet at SAVES (South Antelope Valley Emergency Services), 1002 E. Ave. Q-12 in Palmdale.

Last year, Palmdale residents donated more than 40,000 hours toward service activities.

“If you have an idea for a project or you want to participated in something but you’re not quite sure what, call us or visit us online, and we will help you identify areas of interest,” Jones added.
