Preparing for emergencies

The city of Palmdale Neighborhood Services department will host at 7 p.m. Sept 26 a free emergency preparedness presentation in the City Council Chamber, 38300 Sierra Hwy., Suite B.

Guest speakers will include representatives from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s and Fire departments and the American Red Cross, and they will each provide information and distribute handouts about what residents can expect during a major disaster and how to prepare now.

“September is National Preparedness Month so it is the perfect time to talk about how to prepare for ‘when’-not ‘if’-a disaster strikes,” said Ruth Oschmann, Palmdale crime prevention officer.

“The recent fires in the Santa Clarita and Wrightwood areas are sober reminders of just where we live and what kind of emergencies we need to prepare for,” said Kery German, also a crime prevention officer. “Whether it’s fires, floods, earthquakes or some other kind of disaster, this presentation will offer how-to information, educational presentations and materials on how to be prepared.”

On-line information about emergency preparedness can be accessed by visiting www.ready.gov, www.antelopevalleycert.com, and at wwwlredcrossla.org/antelopevalley.
