Tomorrow and Saturday, Target will host hiring events at its Los Angeles-area stores in order to help fill an estimated 70,000 (14,300 state wide) slots for the holiday season as well as 7,500 team members for its distribution and fulfillment facilities. These new positions will help to ensure that the company’s 1,800 stores nationwide are fully staffed to help guests during the busy holiday shopping season.

Store leaders will conduct pre-scheduled interviews with applicants and discuss Target’s employment culture. Interested candidates can apply in advance at Target.com/Careers or in-store, prior to the day of the hiring event. Candidates who attend the hiring events may have the opportunity to interview on the spot.

United Parcel Service is among the other companies expected to bring on a significant number of workers for the season. According to published reports, the nation’s largest package-delivery plans to hire 95,000 holiday seasonal employees; the job website monster.com, projects that retailers will hire more than 700,000 holiday hires this year compared to 2015.

The global job placement firm Challenger, Gray and Christmas Inc. suggests that because more people are shopping online, job seekers will find more positions that allow them to work from home as well as in other settings outside of a store. Amazon, for example, is hiring customer service associates to work from home in 20 states in its new “Reserves Program.” Pay is $10 an hour, and you can choose to work between one and 30 hours each week, with the flexibility to choose your work hours.

As you seek holiday employment, a spokesman for Challenger, Gray and Christmas Inc. offers some tips than can help bolster your changes of snagging the job:

Go to the places that are hiring, suggests James K. Pedderson, director of public relations for Challenger.

“The best way to make an impression is to let your interest be known. So many people are roped into doing everything online. But a lot of businesses don’t advertise online, especially those types of jobs.”

Sometimes it’s more effective to go into the office, he added.

Pedderson also recommends to let everyone in your network know that you are looking for employment.

He also advises looking in places that many people dont think of such as warehousing, shipping, restaurants and catering.
