Since becoming the pastor at Macedonia Baptist Church in 2011, Pastor Shane B. Scott has been preaching about a healthy lifestyle. That message is greatly needed, as cancer, heart disease, diabetes, hypertension, and other illnesses that are associated to unhealthy diets have greatly effected the African American community.

Scott created the Spring Fest event in 2012, which is an Easter block party event that is held for children. Since he is always promoting a healthy lifestyle, the church urged him to create a 5K run. Scott just had to tweak the idea a little bit.  Because Macedonia Baptist Church has an older population, the event was changed to a run/walk so that everybody could participate.

“This event brought us together as a community around faith, because the church put it on, around fellowship, because there was dancing, and fitness because people did run and walk and get involved,” Scott said.  “It gave people on various levels an opportunity to participate.”

This year, the 3rd Annual Healthy Watts 5K Walk/Run and Health & Wellness Expo will be held on on Saturday, June 11 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.  The 5K will begin and end at Macedonia Baptist Church located at 1751 E. 114th Street in Los Angeles.

The cost for the 5K is $15 per person. Children 11 years and under are free but must be registered and accompanied by an adult. T-shirts will be available for paid participants and prizes will be awarded to the top three finishers in the Men’s, Women’s and Youth categories.
