The Palmdale City Library African American Book Club will meet and unpack on March 15 the popular novel “Half of a Yellow Sun.” They’ll begin at the usual time of 7 p.m., and the event is free.

“Half of a Yellow Sun,” written by Chimamanda Adichie, is a critically renowned story set in the Biafran War in 1960s Nigeria. The effect of the war is shown through the dynamic relationships in the lives of five people, including twin daughters of an influential businessman, a professor, a British citizen, and a houseboy. After Biafra’s declaration of succession, the lives of the main characters are drastically altered and torn apart by the civil war and by personal decisions. The 2007 book jumps between events that took place during the early to late 1960s, when the fighting took place, and extends briefly after the war.

The library, 700 E. Palmdale Blvd., is open seven days a week, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and from 1 to 5 p.m. on Sunday.
