Timely tips to keep cool

While triple-digit temperatures are normal for the summer in the Antelope Valley, Lancaster city officials want residents to stay cool and safe and offer timely tips for the hot weather.

As temperatures rise, the risk of heat-related illnesses should be taken seriously. Residents are reminded to never leave children or pets in a locked vehicle–even with the windows down. When parked in the sun, a vehicle’s interior can heat up to 120 degrees in 30 minutes.

Stay hydrated and drink plenty of liquids, preferably sugar- and caffeine-free refreshments. Plan your outdoor work for the early-morning hours or late in the evening. When possible, try to remain in an air-conditioned or at least a cool and comfortable environment.

Pets require special attention during the heat, therefore provide them with plenty of clean, fresh water. A fresh bowl of water each morning can reduce the chance of mosquitos breeding. Also, try to avoid walking your dog on hot pavement.

When planning your summer vacation, be sure to lock the doors and windows at home. Do not leave a key under the door mat or beneath a planter, over the door ledge, etc. Use timers so that lights, a radio or TV set can go on and off to make it appear that someone is inside. Stop newspaper delivery or have your neighbor collect them daily.

With the July 4 holiday approaching, Lancaster officials remind residents that the use of fireworks–even sparklers–is illegal in the city and in all unincorporated areas of Los Angeles County. The best place to celebrate Independence Day is at the “Hot!! Hot! Hot! 4th of July Extravaganza” at the Antelope Valley Fairgrounds.
