A businessman hoping to reach the November runoff election in the race for a Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors seat expanded his lead over a state senator this week.
The latest tally of ballots from the June 7 primary election shows Darrell Park with 50,415 votes, giving him a roughly 1,200-vote lead over Sen. Bob Huff, R-San Dimas, who has 49,221.
Park initially had just a 400-vote lead over Huff when preliminary votes were tallied following the election. But with thousands of vote-by-mail and provisional ballots still needing to be counted, the race was too close to call.
According to the Registrar-Recorder/County Clerk’s Office, another 178,651 ballots still need to be counted.
The winner between the pair will square off in November against Kathryn Barger, who topped the field of eight candidates battling to replace termed-out Supervisor Michael Antonovich but failed to earn the 50 percent of the vote needed to win the seat outright.
With no candidate winning the Fifth District seat in the primary election, the top two finishers will compete in the November runoff.
The latest tally shows Barger—Antonovich’s chief of staff—with 29.8 percent of the vote, Park with 15.3 percent and Huff with 14.9 percent.
