The National Sorority of Phi Delta Kappa, Inc, Delta Xi Chapter of the Far Western Region recently hosted a youth leadership conference at the Holiday Inn in Torrance. The youth of Beta Phi Chapter of Compton, Far West Regional Director Velma Brown, and President Doris Strickland, were in attendance along with other youth groups in the Far Western Region.

The youth groups, Xinos and Kudos, are teenage boys and girls ages 14-17.  The conference was very engaging and enlightening, spotlighting community activities, educational and cultural involvement that each chapter participated in throughout the year. At this conference, the youth from each chapter competed in individual talent, group skits, built a scrapbook of yearly activities and an original memorized essay. The topic for this year was “Labels do not define me, my actions do.”  These areas were judged and trophies were awarded.

Scholarships were given to deserving youth. Xinos Nia McClinton, president of Beta Phi Xinos was awarded the $750 Winnie Palmer Scholarship. Kudos, Maxie Alexander received a $300 book scholarship from the Anthropos, who are also a part of Beta Phi Sorority.

Youth advisors, Ms. C. Adams and Ms. D. Lowe along with Beta Phi members, have planned a graduation luncheon for the seniors and their parents. At the luncheon, McClinton and Kudos President Darren D. Stokes will be given a $500 scholarship for providing dedication and excellent leadership skills for their club. Other seniors will each receive a $200 book scholarship.

We’re now recruiting for the new school year. If interested, call (310) 532-2244 or (310) 973-8978.
