Rep. Karen Bass (CA-37) and members of the Congressional Black Caucus will participate in a townhall meeting July 30 from 10:30 a.m. to noon at the Community Coalition, 8101 S. Vermont Ave., Los Angeles. The event will focus on gun violence and how the community can organize and work together to reduce shootings and violence in local neighborhoods.

The townhall is part of a continuing effort to address community concerns about violence and will be followed by a listening tour conducted by Bass as well as a solidarity day Aug. 20 from 6-8 p.m. at four local parks (Algin Sutton, Van Ness, Martin Luther King Jr. and St. Andrews).

The solidarity day is part of a move by community residents to reclaim public spaces.

The townhall will feature local gang intervention representatives, including the Ceasefire Committee, who will make presentations and offer solutions on how to deal with the violence. Community members are also welcome to offer solutions.

The listening tour will feature conversations with members of the Watts Gang Taskforce to get an understanding of how this organization has helped reduce violence in housing projects such as Nickerson Gardens and Jordan Downs.

For information on the townhall, contact Community Coalition at info@cocosouthla.org or call (323) 750-9087.
