The picturesque vistas of the Antelope Valley have been a longtime favorite of Hollywood, and a new report indicates that filming has resumed here in a big way. On-location filming in the greater Los Angeles area increased by 5.8 percent in the second quarter of the year, compared to the same period last year, thanks largely to spikes in television pilots and feature films, according to figures released this week.
According to FilmL.A., the nonprofit agency that acts as the film office for the city and county, there were 9,937 “shoot days” in the area between April and June, up from 9,396 during the same period in 2015.
According to the agency’s statistics, on-location feature film shoot days increased from 1,193 in the second quarter of 2015 to 1,309 this year. FilmL.A. officials attributed the growth to the state’s film and tax credit incentives aimed at keeping production companies in the area.
“We’re delighted to report a second straight quarter of feature growth for Los Angeles, as we’d hoped for and predicted,” said FilmL.A. President Paul Audley. “We expect these production increases to continue until the state’s incentive reaches full utilization.”
Production on television pilots jumped from 147 days from April to June last year to 278 in the same period this year, a jump of 89.1 percent. Television drama production jumped by 3.8 percent, although TV comedy shoot days dropped by 16.8 percent.
Overall television production was up by 1.4 percent in the second quarter.
