Jane Ingram Allen, an environmental artist, will begin a 30-day residency tomorrow at MOAH:CEDAR’s Andrew Frieder Creative Space in Lancaster.
Allen is the first participant in the art gallary’s Artist-in-Residence program and will produce original works, give a series of talks about her artistic process, mentor visiting local artists and also lead a community papermaking workshop.
The Alabama-native was a Fulbright Scholar in Taiwan before settling in Santa Rosa. She is a former university professor, an experienced curator and an arts writer. Her past projects include “For the Birds,” a multi-part environmental art installation consisting of hand-woven nests; “California Delta Rivers,” a site-specific wall installation crafted from recycled blue jeans and local plant waste materials (a piece designed to address California’s water issues), and “Making My Bed,” which is a mixed-media environmental sculpture depicting a canopy of magnolia trees over a quilt of handmade paper. Allen and members of the Lancaster community will create a similar structure during her residency.
“My work is focused on raising environmental awareness by creating interactive and collaborative art projects using natural and recycled materials, and the natural cycle of chance over time,” Allen said.
The residency is sponsored in part by the Lancaster Museum and Public Art Foundation, and the Women’s Eco Artist Dialog which has partnered in the past with MOAH:CEDAR to produce the “Smaller Footprints” exhibition which is currently on display at the gallery.
