Sheriff’s detectives launched an investigation this week into a burglary at an Acton post office in which two mail trucks and a master key were stolen.

The break-in took place between 1 and 3:45 a.m. Monday at the U.S. Post Office located at 3632 Smith Ave. The two mail trucks were found shortly after the burglary, but the master key has not been recovered.

“At the time of the burglary, unknown suspect(s) entered the facility and stole the master key to the Acton community mailboxes and then took two mail trucks,” according to a news release issued by the Palmdale Sheriff’s station. Deputies chased one of the trucks into the area of Shannondale Road and Sierra Highway where it reportedly crashed. After the accident, the driver got into a dark Ford Mustang that was also chased by deputies before the pursuit was terminated. The second truck was found in the area of Escondido Canyon and Jones Canyon roads.

Anyone with information about the burglary and suspicious activity at the community mailboxes in Acton is urged to call the Palmdale Sheriff’s station at (661) 272-2400. Those with information about the location of the burglar(s) may call (661) 272-2456.
