Holiday cheer in Compton

Former Clippers and UCLA star Baron Davis will help to transform Wilson Park in Compton into a winter wonderland on Dec. 17 complete with a toy giveaway, a battle-of-the-bands and drill team competition, and a list of celebrity guests all scheduled from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Davis’ Black Santa Company will partner with Compton Mayor Aja Brown to host the event which will also include holiday carols sung by local schools choirs, as well as a car show. Persons wishing to donate a new, unwrapped toy should stop by a the park, located 123 N. Rose St., anytime between 7 and 11 a.m. on  Saturday, or prior to the event from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Dollarhide Community Center, 301 N. Tamarind Ave.

Davis, a two-time NBA All Star, established the Black Santa Company as a new media firm that creates new characters, contemporary and engaging content, and high quality products that celebrate diversity, a positive outlook and fun.

“With all that going in this country,” Davis said, “and particularly in the African American community, I want to offer heroes and role models through storytelling. Black Santa is the first character. His mission is to celebrate diversity, the joy of giving and the magic of good.”
