With the last weeks of summer on the horizon, students, parents and educational officials are preparing for the start of school with new programs. Locally the Brotherhood Crusade has received a $50,000 grant form the National Basketball Players Association that will supports it Mentor & Me program for the next year.
According to Brotherhood Crusade President and CEO Charisse Bremond Weaver, the afterschool program will serve 150 high-risk youth, 10-18 years old who reside in South Los Angeles and attend John Muir Middle school, Foshay Learning Center, and Duke Ellington Continuation High School.
The mentoring program is centered around literacy with a goal of helping improve the skills of students who are three to four grade levels behind. Additionally, the program will include information on health and wellness, and will give youngsters training and experience in providing community service.
The students attend the afterschool program in 10-to-12-week sessions throughout the year.
Teachers and principals will help select the students participating in this free program, but parents or guardians also have the option of enrolling their youngster in the program by calling the Brotherhood Crusade at (323) 846-1649.
