The fourth annual Powerfest merged African and Latin cultures this past Saturday at Martin Luther King Jr. Park in the historic King Estates neighborhood of South Los Angeles. The free music festival attracted a large crowd that danced and socialized with local residents at the event, which was called a day of celebration, empowerment and education.

Powefest used the power of art and music to inspire people to take action and join organizations working to improve the lives of Angelenos. This year’s event featured live acts on a main stage ranging from renown artists Terrance Martin, Bogaloo Assassins to Mr. Choc and more.

The day also featured five art installations that spoke to issues within the community. The installations included live art, visual art, and photography on display that all spoke to the theme of “We Are South LA.”

The festival was hosted by Community Coalition, and during the past five years, the nonprofit organization has helped transform neighborhoods through a series of community-led activities, including clean ups, partnerships with local businesses, and civic engagement activities. Through theses events, Martin Luther King Jr. Park has been renovated, a recreation center has been opened, there has been increased park programming, and the neighborhood has been provided with weekly produce stands.
