Memorial Day ceremony set

The Antelope Valley Service Organization Association (AVSOA) will hold its Memorial Day ceremony at 11 a.m. May 25 at Desert Lawn Memorial Park, 2200 East Avenue S, in Palmdale.

Palmdale Mayor Jim Ledford will offer welcoming remarks and will introduce the dignitaries. The event is free and open to the public. A special Memorial Day observance will also take place at the old Palmdale Cemetery, 20th Street East, immediately following the ceremony.

Bobby Breech, AVSOA chairman, will serve as master of ceremonies. Local organizations participating include the Highland High School Air Force Junior ROTC, Sons of American Legion Post 311, Daughters of the American Revolution, American Legion Post 348, Elks Lodge 2027, VFW Post 3552 and a color guard. Remarks are expected by Breech, John E.A. Clark of the Sons of the American Legion Post 311, Viola Lawrence-Registrar of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Richard Hayes of the American Legion Post 348, Wes Snow of Elks Lodge 2027 and Terry Hopper of VFW Post 3552.

The ceremony will include the raising of the colors and Pledge of Allegiance, invocation/benediction by John E.A. Clark, the national anthem, a Table of Honors ceremony, laying of wreaths and a salute to veterans. The ceremony will conclude with taps.

The AVSOA comprises more than 30 area service clubs and encourages the community to participate in their events. Each year, the AVSOA implements services for Memorial Day, Flag Day/POW-MIA Day and Veterans Day.
