Southland recognizes veterans

A variety of Memorial Day activities will be held locally to recognize past and present war heroes while honoring men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice of giving their lives while serving in the United States Armed Forces.

The city of Inglewood will hold its 67th annual Memorial Day Service May 25 beginning at 11 a.m. at Inglewood City Hall, 1 W. Manchester Blvd., on the South Mall courtyard in front of the Memorial Obelisk Monument.

“Memorial Day is a day of remembrance for those who have died in service to the United States,” said Inglewood Mayor James T. Butts Jr. “Inglewood takes great pride in honoring the memories of those who have given all to defend our nation.”

This year’s ceremonies will include the playing of taps, Presentation of Colors, remarks by special military guests, and a memorial wreath laying service. Local and community-based organizations will also take part in the ceremonies.

Carson will hold a roll call in honor of all branches of the military that have served. The event will take place on May 22 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Juanita Millender-McDonald Community Center, 801 E. Carson St.

Among the planned activities are a video presentation, remarks by Navy veteran Emmanual Solomon, a roll call starting with the Revolutionary War, a reading of the names of Carson veterans killed in the line of duty, a presentation of a wreath, playing of taps and prayers by local choirs and churches.

The Gardena Nisei Memorial VFW Post 1961 will hold a number of Memorial Day Services honoring all deceased post members who served in defense of America on foreign soil. The first will be held May 24 at 2 p.m. in the Nisei Veterans Hall at the Gardena Valley Japanese Cultural Institute, 1964 W. 162nd St., Gardena.

The service will feature a keynote address by Robert DeCarlo, First Sergeant Thierry Williams and the Gardena High School Junior ROTC. Friends and family can participate in a candle lighting ceremony and more.

Another event takes place May 25 beginning at 9 a.m. at Rose Hills Memorial Park Mortuary, 3888 Workman Mill Road, Gate 10, Whittier. The event will feature the playing of taps, floral tributes by family and friends and a presentation by the Redondo Beach Union High School Marine Corps Junior ROTC Honor Guard and Rifle Squad.
