Rep. Steve Knight (CA-25) this week announced his co-sponsorship of legislation that will promote “safety and certainty” for the commercial space industry.

House Resolution 2262 represents the Spurring Private Aerospace Competitiveness and Entrepreneurship Act of 2015, or SPACE Act, and was introduced in the Science, Space and Technology committee by House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy (CA-23). The bill passed out of the committee on Wednesday and awaits consideration on the House floor. The bill would provide stable and predictable regulatory conditions for the commercial space industry by improving safety conditions and encouraging private sector investment.

“The commercial space industry is essential to advocating (for) our nation’s space program,” Knight said. “This bill will give businesses the regulatory certainty they need to innovate and grow.” The SPACE Act is the product of years of negotiations between members of congress, commercial space companies and industry. It has the support of the Mojave Air and Space Port as well as the Commercial Space Federation, SpaceX, Virgin Galactic and the Spaceship Company,  all of which do business primarily in Southern California.

“I’m pleased to join my colleagues on this effort to straighten our nation’s space policy and bring space-related jobs to our communities,” said Rep. Knight, who is the son of famous astronaut, test pilot and former Antelope Valley Rep. William “Pete” Knight.
