Dorsey High School was recently nominated by the California Department of Education as one of five Green Achiever schools or districts.
State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Torlakson nominated four California schools and a school district to compete in the U.S. Department of Education Green Ribbon Schools recognition program, which honors schools that excel in energy conservation and environmental education.
The California Green Ribbon Schools (CA-GRS) recognition award uses the applications submitted for nomination to the United States Department of Education Green Ribbon Schools (ED-GRS) to recognize schools and school districts across the state for environmental excellence and demonstrated achievement of the three Pillars of ED-GRS. Pillar I: reduce environmental impact and costs; Pillar II: improve the health and wellness of schools, students, and staff; and Pillar III: provide effective environmental and sustainability literacy, incorporating science, technology, engineering, and mathematics education (STEM), civic skills, and green career pathways.
No application is required for CA-GRS. All complete ED-GRS applications of public schools and school districts will be automatically considered for the California Department of Education’s state award. Private school awards are conferred by the California Association of Private School Organizations.
“Green Achievers” is the highest honor in California’s Green Ribbon awards program.
“I applaud these schools for their commitment to helping students learn about the environment and to adopting their own policies to save energy and resources,” said Torlakson, during a news conference at the El Monte Union High School District. “By incorporating environmental literacy and sustainability practices, these schools are creating stronger and healthier campuses and communities.”
Dorsey’s programs promote outdoor and hands-on learning, STEAM, and career technical training. Community engagement, collaboration, and service are at the heart of these offerings including the Baldwin Hills Greenhouse Internship and Restoration Leadership, the Leo Politi Elementary mentorship programs, and Eco-Club.
