A community resource fair will take place from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. May 16 at 1715 W. Florence Ave. The event will spotlight many of the options residents have in offering suggestions and/or solutions to problems facing inner-city families.

Organizers will discuss on-going controversies within the criminal justice system, specifically a possible change of California felony convictions to misdemeanors for (1) simple drug possession, (2) petty theft under $950, (3) shoplifting under $950, (4) receipt of stolen property under $950, and (5) forgery or writing a bad check under $950 because of Proposition 47 (the Safe Neighborhoods and Schools Act).

Those attending can also access free and affordable health care through My Health LA or Medi-Cal expansions. These healthcare services can assist persons in covering emergency services, maternity and newborn care, mental health screenings/services, dental care and physical and occupational therapy for low-income and immigrant households. Also, you can learn how to apply for deferred action (in regard to immigration status) and a driver’s license for immigrant children and parents through a series of recurring workshops.

Persons who wish to have their record reviewed and possibly changed—as it relates to Proposition 47—should bring income information such as a paystub or benefits notice, proof of residence, and the docket number or “rap sheet” for each conviction. Non-citizens should bring proof of legal status in the United States.

Those interested in the healthcare component of the workshop should bring proof of citizenship such as a birth certificate, permanent resident card or certificate of naturalization, or a U.S. passport. Also bring along the last 30 days of paystubs, a 2014 federal income tax filing, and your social security card. Proof of residence is required, and a photo ID such as a driver’s license or passport will also be necessary.

The services are free and confidential and will be provided by the Legal Aid Foundation of Los Angeles and the UMMA (University Muslim Medical Association) Community Clinic.
