Five libraries in Council District 8—Angeles Mesa, Exposition Park-Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune Regional, Hyde Park Miriam Matthews, John Muir, and Mark Twain—will recieve a portion of $30,000 in discretionary funds from Councilmember Bernard C. Parks as a token of his appreciation for the value they have brought to the community.

Parks has been a strong proponent for the preservation of libraries and is said to be proud that the facilities have adapted to accommodate patrons’ appetite for job assistance services, computer and internet access (new tech kiosk at Hyde Park branch will circulate laptops and tablets), adult literacy programs, art and cultural exhibits, and more.

In 2011, Parks authored Measure L (which voters approved by 63 percent). The legislation which was passed in 2010 restored library services after the 2007 Great Recession caused libraries citywide to significantly reduce their hours and staff.

The $30,000 donation is money from Parks’ AB 1290 account. Each of the 15 councilmembers has AB 1290 funds available to use for projects in their districts as they wish. AB 1290 funds originated from the former Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA) project areas that were eliminated.
