On July 12, A.C. Bilbrew Library will close temporarily for about a year to allow the county to effect a $4.4 million refurbishment of the facility which was initially erected in 1974.

During the closure the some of the library’s activities, including summer reading program for youth, which starts in July, will take place at Athens Park in the community room, 12603 S. Broadway.

Additionally, A.C. Bilbrew is home to the county’s Black Resource Center, and some of the most popular items from the collection will be transferred to the Norwalk Library. The other items will be packed away and stored.

Library patrons will be able to pick up holds and return items to the Athens temporary space. A limited number of public computers will also be set up for use. There will also be a limited selection of books available for use.

Among the refurbishments taking place are painting the exterior, enhancing the courtyard for interior use, installation of new furniture, a new and smaller check-out desk, the inclusion of solar panels, and landscaping.
