New faces headed to local city councils

The unofficial results of elections in Carson and Compton will yield a number of new faces on the respective city councils of these two cities.

In the Carson special election to replace Mike Gipson, who was elected to the state assembly, Jawane R. Hilton captured 2,135 votes and is expected to be sworn in on June 16. Hilton will serve until March 2017.

In Compton’s run-off election, incumbent Janna Zurita edged out Richard Alatorre 752 votes to 615 in District 1 to win her second four-year term on the council.

In District 4, incumbent Willie O. Jones lost to former school board member Emma Sharif by a vote of 433 to 353. Jones will finish up his second and final term on June 30, and Sharif is expected to be sworn in on July 1.
