The city of Palmdale will present the first of three anti-bullying workshops Saturday called “Take a Stand Against Bullying.” The two-hour workshop, which begins at 9 a.m., will take place in partnership with Best Start and Girl Scouts Gold Award candidate Jo Barrera.

The workshops are designed for students in grades 5-12 and will cover types of bullying, bullying prevention and ways to take action against bullying. Workshops will be conducted in English and Spanish and interactive stations and snacks will be featured at each session.

“This is yet another example of how the city of Palmdale and those in our community who truly want to make a difference can collaborate to make a neighborhood stronger and better,” said Palmdale Mayor Jim Ledford.

Workshop partner Barrera is a Senior Girl Scout in Troop 9022 in Palmdale. She’s pursuing the Girl Scouts Gold Award, the organization’s highest honor. To win the national award, a girl must meet benchmarks that elevate her leadership skills, creativity, value and efforts to improve society.

Earning the Gold Award requires spending at least 80 hours planning and implementing a challenging, large-scale project that is innovative, engages others, and has a lasting impact on its targeted community.

Best Start is a local offshoot of First5 LA, which advocates for the health and education of small children.

Saturday’s workshop will take place at Yucca Neighborhood House, 503 E. Ave. Q-3; on Aug. 15, 9 to 11 a.m., at Manzanita Neighborhood House, 38627 32nd St. East, and again on Aug. 22, 9 to 11 a.m., at Tumbleweed Neighborhood House, 1129 E. Ave. R-4.
