The Palmdale City Library tomorrow will celebrate from 1 to 5 p.m. the annual Japanese Tanabata festival. The event is free for teens 13 to 17 years and will feature authentic Japanese snacks as well as craft sessions. There will also be an anime film screening.
“We’re really excited to be putting on this special event, with the support of our Friends of the Palmdale Library,” said Marissa Thompson, youth librarian. “Tanabata festivals are conducted once a year in Japan, in the summer, to honor the two stars Vega and Altair. According to Japanese legend, these two stars are lovers, who are separated by the Milky Way, except on one night when they get to meet every summer. This day is celebrated with a Tanabata festival.”
The library will also host on July 13 at 4 p.m. the next meeting of its popular Storycrafter’s Club for Kids, designed for youngsters 5 to 9 years.
“We’ve got a great craft (event) lined up, and it should be a lot of fun,” said Jamielee Brown, library assistant. “And not only that, you can get your Summer Reading log stamped.” Library officials encourage children and teens to continue reading during summer vacation to remain sharp in language arts when the new semester begins.
The Palmdale City Library is located at 700 E. Palmdale Blvd. Hours are from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, and from 1 to 5 p.m. on Sunday.
