Johnathon Ervin has announced that he will vie against Sharon Runner for the 21st Senate District seat in next year’s election.

Ervin, a Democrat, said in his announcement statement this week that he wants to focus on “leading the charge” on protecting and expanding the aerospace industry. He also wants to address the drought, create what he calls “mortgage-paying” jobs in the district, and reinvest in education.

“Families and hardworking taxpayers deserve someone who is going to fight for them in Sacramento,” said Ervin, an Iraq War veteran. “I am ready to fight for our district and our values. As a veteran, husband, father and community leader, I am ready to lead that fight for the 21st Senate District.”

The 21st Senate District includes Palmdale, Lancaster, Santa Clarita, Victorville, Apple Valley and Hisperia. Despite the Antelope Valley being a largely Republican enclave, Democrats in the 21st Senate District reportedly hold a 37.6-percent to 35.9-percent registration advantage over Republicans.

“Leadership doesn’t cut and run,” Ervin said. “Leadership isn’t afraid to stand up for what we believe in. I lead from the front. I’m going to be front and center on the issues of the day—aerospace, the drought, job creation, education—and I’m not going to run from the tough issues. I’m not afraid to take on the big fight. The families of the 21st district deserve someone in their corner with battlefield-tested experience.”

Ervin and his family have resided in the Antelope Valley for 13 years. He is a senior field engineer for Raytheon Intelligence and Information Systems and once served as a planning commissioner for the city of Lancaster. He is a former board member of the Muroc Joint Unified School District.
