Narbonne High makes history by winning the State Bowl

The City Section has taken a back seat to the Southern Section for years in the greater Los Angeles area, but right now the city is on top as Narbonne becomes the section’s first team to win the CIF State Bowl title.

Narbonne traveled to Sacramento State University, where the team won the Division I-A title with a 28-14 victory over Clayton Valley Charter of Concord.

Halftime adjustments were the difference in this game, as Clayton Valley rushed for a whopping 227 yards in the first half, but Narbonne recovered and limited them to only 61 yards in the second half. Narbonne led 14-7 at halftime and took control early in the third quarter.

Narbonne Quarterback Roman Ale threw for 117 yards and ran for a touchdown, while running back Sean Riley rushed for 98 yards and two touchdowns.

This is Narbonne’s second opportunity at the state title. In 2012, after winning the city championship, the Gauchos lost in a state semi-final game. That team, along with Crenshaw’s 2009 team, were the only City Section teams that have had an opportunity to play for a state championship.

The accolades did not stop at this championship for Narbonne, because Ale was named the City Football Player of the Year. He threw for 3,426 yards and 45 touchdowns with only six interceptions for the season. In fact, Narbonne was so dominant this year that they had 13 players make the All-City team.

Narbonne coach Manuel Douglas was named Coach of the Year, wide receiver DeVaughn Cooper was named Offensive Player of the Year, and defensive end Anthony Pandy was named Defensive Lineman of the year.

Riley, wide receiver Cedric Byrd, offensive lineman Alex Akingbulu, offensive lineman King James Taylor, linebacker Lawson Hall, linebacker Raymond Scott and defensive end Dominic Peterson were all named first-team All-City. Offensive lineman Shaman Tupua, defensive back Jamal Hicks, and defensive back Vincent Heard made the second team.
