Serra is taking on the City Section’s toughest league, as they look to pick up back-to-back wins against two of the Marine League’s best teams. Last Friday night they knocked off Carson 31-6, and this Friday they will host Narbonne.
Against Carson, Serra was clearly the better team, as they led the game from the opening drive and never looked back. Carson was able to keep the game relatively close in the first half by playing good defense, Serra led 14-6 at the break. But offensively, Carson had issues moving the ball the length of the field against Serra’s defense.
Serra was able to pull away in the second half. The Cavalier used a two-quarterback system for the most part, with senior Caleb Wilson serving as their passer, and junior Khalil Tate rushing. Wilson finished the game completing 11-of-16 passes for 144 yards. Tate was able to get in the open field on a number of runs; he rushed for 117 yards on 11 carries with two touchdowns. He also complete 3-of-5 passes, one of which went in for a touchdown.
Senior Stanley Norman was all over the field. He had four receptions for 64 yards; broke up two passes while playing cornerback, and he returned one kickoff past midfield.
Carson is a tough opponent, but look for Narbonne to give Serra a much tougher challenge.
Meanwhile, Narbonne lost to another powerhouse program Friday, as Alemany defeated them 51-30. This is the second consecutive loss for the Gauchos. The week before, they fell to Long Beach Poly 34-21. In both games, against two of the best teams in Southern California, Narbonne was competitive, but mistakes did them in.
Serra will be the favorite this Friday night, but Narbonne could just as easily take this game.
It is great to see Serra face both Carson and Narbonne, and the two Marine League schools will play each other later in the season. Most of these athletes grew up playing youth football together, and that makes these match-ups even more intriguing.
