Residents of Watts who are looking for help to make their homes more energy efficient can get assistance completing paperwork for the Home Energy Improvement program operated by the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power during a Green the Block Fair Saturday from 9:30 a.m.-1 p.m. at Macedonia Baptist Church, 1751 E. 114th St.

Green the Block is a Repower LA event conducted with assistance from 15th District Councilman Joe Buscaino. Among the free available retrofitting services are attic insulation, installation of new shower heads and new energy-efficient light bulbs.

For more information about the program, call DWP at (888) 822-8497.

In addition to the retrofitting help, the Green the Block fair will also introduce attendees who are interested in working in this segment of the industry to a training program operated jointly by LA DWP and the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) Local 18.

The Utility Precraft Training Program (UPCT) gives participants two to three years of on-the-job training in the various DWP departments, and prepares individuals to take the Los Angeles City civil service exam in order to obtain a permanent job. The process begins with submitting an application for the program and getting on the prospective list.

Each class typically consists of 25 to 35 trainees, who have waited on the list up to two years. Spots open up, whenever a trainee has passed the civil service exam and been placed in a permanent job.

Those eligible to participate in this training program must be a Los Angeles County resident and have a valid California driver’s license. Pay is $16 per hour plus benefits, and there is a special emphasis on helping those with employment barriers such as criminal convictions.
