The city of Lancaster is currently accepting applications from local high school students who are interested in serving on this year’s Lancaster Youth Commission.

The Lancaster Youth Commission offers young people an opportunity to learn about local government and play an active role in their community, while building leadership skills. Youth commissioners will have the opportunity to facilitate meetings, make presentations and create a network of resources through their participation in city and community events. The commission will discuss community service opportunities, issues facing today’s youth and provide insight to City Council and city staff on the needs and desires of Lancaster youth.

The Youth Commission will meet the second Thursday of each month beginning in October 2014, and run through June 2015.

Interested students must attend a high school in Lancaster. Nominations will be accepted by teachers, guidance counselors and school administrators, as well as community leaders. Students may also self-nominate. Interested students can visit Lancaster City Hall (44933 Fern Avenue) to fill out an application or pick one up from school personnel. Youth Commission applications must be submitted by 5 p.m. Friday, Sept. 12.

For further information regarding the Lancaster Youth Commission, call Lancaster’s Parks Recreation and Arts Department at (661) 723-6077.
