At least four people were killed in South Los Angeles in a series of Labor Day shootings that also left several victims wounded, police said Tuesday.

About 7:30 p.m. Monday, two victims were shot in the 2600 block of Dalton Avenue, north of Jefferson Boulevard, said Officer Liliana Preciado of the Los Angeles Police Department’s Media Relations office.

James Smith, 20, of Los Angeles died at the scene, said coroner’s Assistant Chief Ed Winter. A 17-year-old boy was taken to a hospital in critical condition, Preciado said. There were no immediate arrests.

About 9 p.m. Monday, a man and woman were shot in the torso in an alley in the 3600 block of Ninth Avenue, said Detective David Garrido of the LAPD’s Criminal Gang Homicide Division.

The woman was pronounced dead at the scene and the man was transported to a hospital in critical condition. The woman was identified as 25-year-old Brittney Jene Barnett, said coroner’s Lt. Fred Corral.

The two shootings were not related to each other, but both may be gang-related, Garrido said.

Earlier Monday, a double homicide was reported at roughly 2 p.m. near the intersection of West Florence and South Vermont avenues, Officer Jane Kim of the LAPD said. The two men, one in his 30s and the other in his 20s, were both shot, and died at a hospital, Winter said. Their names were withheld, pending notification of their relatives.

About an hour later and several blocks away, another person was shot at West 65th Street and South Vermont Avenue, Kim. The victim was hospitalized with stable vital signs, she added.

According to Lt. John Neal of the LAPD’s 77th division, there was at least one shooting per hour in various neighborhoods throughout inner city Los Angeles on Monday aftrnoon. One person was shot in each of the incidents and taken to an area hospital, he said.

One shooting was reported near Crenshaw Boulevard and Slauson Avenue, another at South Normandie Avenue and West 54th Street and one more at a street somewhere near Vermont Avenue, Jenal said.

Another person was hurt by gunfire just before 8 p.m. at South Normandie and west Manchester avenues, Jenal added. The victim in that shooting was taken to a nearby hospital with the help of a civilian, the lieutenant further explained.

The incidents are not believed to be connected, but some of them may be gang-related, Jenal said.
