Three democrats and one republican have thrown their hats into the ring seeking to fill the unexpired state senate term of Rod Wright.

Wright was convicted this year of voter fraud, forced to resign from office and sentenced to jail for running for office in a district where he did not live.

The leading democrat, Isadore Hall III, is a two-term Compton-area assemblyman who racked up an impressive list of endorsements even before the filing deadline, including the backing of the dean of California Black politics, former Assembly Speaker Willie Brown Jr.

Assemblyman Steven Bradford, a Gardena politician, who had initially expressed an intention to run for the vacated Senate seat, decided at the last minute not to submit his nomination papers.

The other two democrats vying for the seat include retired teacher Louis Dominguez, a long-time political operative who has lived in the South Bay area since he was a child; and Hector Serrano, who calls his campaign a “grassroots” effort funded and endorsed by the middle class.

James Spencer, the lone republican in the contest, is an Inglewood businessman who has previously run for elected office.

The district stretches from Inglewood in the north down to the Port of Los Angeles and the San Pedro neighborhood of Los Angeles. The communities of Carson, Compton, Gardena, Hawthorne, Inglewood, Lawndale, Long Beach, Los Angeles and Torrance are included in the district which is nearly 61 percent democratic.

The primary election is scheduled Dec. 9; Nov. 24 is the deadline to register to vote.
