‘Something Special Just for You’

Poetry is a free flowing form of art. There is a very loose base structure for poetry, but there is no real rigid definition of how a poem is supposed to be designed, making it both easy and difficult to produce.

Ardrian Newell is a great example of a poet with an understanding of how to create quality poetry. Newell’s new book “Something Special Just for You” is a brilliant collection of original poems, 16 in total. Each poem was written as a result of inspiration from different periods in her life.

“[These poems] were arranged together to encourage people, to evoke thought, and to maybe put a smile on the reader’s face,” Newell said. This self-published book of poems covers a range of topics including love, individualism, community, and other issues people face everyday. The poems are organized into four different sections: “Something Special for Everybody”, “Something Special for Lovers”, “Something Special for the Community”, and “Something Special for a Few Individuals.” Each section contains four poems, and there is a special section at the end called “Something Special for All” with one bonus poem. Individuality is a common concept that Newell revisits throughout the book.

In reading the book, it is evident that Newell intended to promote self-acceptance. She also strives to inspire people to embrace all aspects of love and share that within their community. Newell said, “The book is titled ‘Something Special Just for You’ because I wanted readers to feel as if my words were created just for them.”

In a standout poem, “In the Moment,” Newell tries to get the reader to realize that living in the “here and now” is an important aspect of a happy life. Other highlights included, “What Chu’ Looking At?” and “God Bless The United State of the Negro.”

“Something Special Just for You” is a well crafted piece of literature that deserves a solid grade of a B. I am no poet, but I can appreciate good work, and this collection of poems is definitely worthwhile. While this book does inspire and provide messages of positivity and love, it seemed as though Newell didn’t express her full potential as a poet (which may have been intentional in order to appeal to such a wide ranging audience). Nevertheless, Newell put together a quality collection of poems that inspire, teach, and motivate readers of all ages.
