A bipartisan group of Southland Congress members signed a letter asking the U.S. Olympic Committee to pick Los Angeles as the nation’s bidder for the 2024 Summer Olympic Games, Rep. Xavier Becerra’s office said today.

Los Angeles is one of four U.S. finalists named this summer. San Francisco, Boston and Washington, D.C. are also potential bidders  considered by the U.S. Olympic Committee, which is expected to select a city in the next few months.

Becerra and other Congress members said in a Nov. 13 letter to the committee that they “stand ready to partner with the city of Los Angeles in this endeavor,” just as they did when Los Angeles successfully secured the 2015 Special Olympics World Games.

“Los Angeles is a vibrant and diverse city that embodies the highest ideals of the Olympic spirit,” the letter said. “From the rich Olympic tradition to the world-class infrastructure, the natural beauty of the region to the hospitality, Los Angeles has the ability to provide a second to none atmosphere for the athletes, coaches, officials, and spectators.”

“We look forward to the opportunity to work with you and the City of Los Angeles as we pursue a winning American bid,” the letter said.

The letter was signed by Becerra and 20 other Congress members: Karen Bass, Henry Waxman, Julia Brownley, Tony Cardenas, Judy Chu, Janice Hahn, Ken Calvert, Alan S. Lowenthal, Grace Napolitano, Gloria Negrete McLeod, Lucille

Roybal-Allard, Edward R. Royce, Linda T. Sanchez, Loretta Sanchez, Adam B. Schiff, Brad Sherman, Mark Takano, Juan Vargas and Maxine Waters.

Rep. Dina Titus, who represents the Las Vegas area, joined her Southern California colleagues in signing the letter.
