The Awaken the Greatness Foundation (ATG) will host its second annual Black Family Conference on Nov. 22 from 9 a.m.- 2 p.m. at the Los Angeles Third Church for Spiritual Living in Leimert Park, 4323 S. Leimert Blvd.

The free event is focused on helping local Black families find solutions for economic empowerment, realize the power of the Black dollar, and increase their family’s financial literacy.

This year’s conference theme is “Cooperative Economics and Empowerment,’ and the confab will feature interactive sessions throughout Leimert Park, the African American enclave of business and art.

A total of five workshops for adults and youth will be presented. They will discuss entrepreneurship, credit, investments and homeownership. At the same time, youth ages 6-11 will learn about savings. Another session will talk about the power of the Black dollar and what individuals can do to help the community prosper. The final meeting for the entire family will guide participants toward developing a financial future.

Breakout sessions for youth will be held at the neighboring KAOS Network and lunch will be provided in front of the historic Vision Theater.

Free childcare will be provided for children ages 1-5 years old.

There is no fee to register for the conference but seating is limited. All families in attendance will receive free lunch, groceries, and school supplies. For more information or to register your family, visit www.awakenthegreatness.org or contact (323) 743-3660.

“No matter what theme we choose every year, our annual conference sheds light on our dynamic history. The activities that will take place are crucial for African Americans to start realizing just how powerful they can be by the choices they make with their money, no matter what their household incomes are,” says Layla Sewell, executive director of ATG.

The Black family conference is held in partnership with the West Angeles Community Development Corporation (CDC), the Empowerment Congress West Area Neighborhood Development Council, One United Bank and People for Community Improvement.

With something for the entire family, the conference will help parents make decisions regarding entrepreneurship, credit, investments and homeownership. Children will learn about saving and the important role they play in their family’s finances, with implications that can affect their financial decisions as they move into adulthood.
