Celebrating 40 years of dazzling audiences worldwide, the internationally acclaimed masked theatre troupe Mummenschanz will bring its newest show featuring highlights of four decades of groundbreaking performances, to the stage of the Lancaster Performing Arts Center, Sunday Nov. 16 at 3 p.m.
Founded in 1972 by Bernie Schürch, Andres Bossard and the Italian-American Floriana Frassetto, Mummenschanz is a Swiss theater troupe, tackling everyday problems in a surreal Mime-Masque Theatre style which pokes fun and explores laughable situations.
Mummenschanz became popular for its subtle, comical and delightful choreography, playful use of bizarre masks and oversized forms, and treatment of light and shadows. Mummenschanz appeared as special guest stars during the final episode of the first season of The Muppet Show in November 1976. The troupe won the prestigious Rose d’Or for their TV production La Pomme in 1980. Mummenschanz also appeared on 3-2-1 Contact in the 1980s and Northern Exposure in the 1990s. The year 2012 marked its fortieth anniversary, which today the ensemble is celebrating with its audiences all over the world, in cities such as Berlin, Rome, Milan, Paris, Vienna, London, New York City, Boston, Mexico City and many more.
The troupe’s name, Mummenschanz, is German for “mummery” or a play involving “mummers” or “mimes.” More than a just an eccentric title, Mummenschantz signifies a myth cloaked in mystery and wonder.
