Thousands of summer jobs expected

Youth in Los Angeles County may be eligible to apply for one of thousands of summer jobs available in the region.

In the county, officials expect to have 12,000 spots to fill at private and public businesses.

These jobs start July 1 and continue until the end of September. They target Los Angeles County residents ages 14-21 who are low income, in foster care, on probation, or in the CalWorks program. Should enough funding come through, other youth may apply as well.

Participants in the program receive 20 hours of work readiness training, work 100 hours for the summer and earn $9 per hour.

Interested individuals must to sign up online: www.youthjobs.css.lacounty.gov. Applicants will be contacted to come in and formally enroll.

The city of Los Angeles Hire a Youth program expects to place 10,000 young people ages 14-24 in a six-week program that begins July 7.

Young people must be city residents have the right to work and will work 120 hours in a private or public work places.

Individuals interested in sponsoring a youth can donate $2,000 to the program through the mayor’s office.

To sign up, young people must visit the web site www.hirelayouth.com.

In the past the city of Compton has hired at least 100 14-to 18-year-old residents who will work from 100-150 hours. Those interested must sign up at the Compton Career Link Monday through Thursday from 7 a.m.-6 p.m. at 700 N. Bullis Road.

There are other sources for summer employment to consider. The American Camp Association lists openings at camps around the nation. Visit the web site at http://www.acacamps.org/ then click on jobs and seasonal or summer jobs.

Young people ages 11-15 can also create their own employment opportunities by training as a babysitter. The American Red Cross offers classes at various locations in the region for $85.
