Councilman to hear about ‘sick-day’ woes

Ninth District Councilman Curren Price is taking a listening tour today to hear from constituents to understand how the lack of paid sick days impacts their lives.

The tour starts at Fremont High School, swings by St. John’s Well Child and Family Clinic and finishes as the Slauson El Super Market.

The councilman is taking the tour in response to a growing national conversation on public health and paid sick time.

According to Shop Well L.A., the bulk of L.A.’s increasing share of low-wage retail and grocery stores, such as El Super, Superior, and Walmart are

concentrated in low-income areas like South Los Angeles. These companies either do not offer paid sick time or penalize their workers for taking sick time, causing disproportionately worse economic and public health problems in these communities.

Councilmember Price is hearing these stories in preparation for discussions he hopes to start on city council to begin addressing the challenges presented by the situation. If you have a story to tell, contact his office at 200 N. Spring St., Room 420, Los Angeles, 90012 or (213) 213 473-7009.
