A 46-year-old man on a bicycle was fatally wounded in South Los Angeles Sunday morning, a homicide lieutenant said.

The shooting occurred at 12:30 a.m. at Main Street and Century Boulevard, said South Bureau Homicide Lt. Jeff Nolte.

It was the first homicide of 2014 in the South Bureau, Nolte said.

The victim was identified by police as Don Jackson.

He was riding a bicycle southbound on the west side of Main Street when a suspect approached on foot and opened fire, striking Jackson multiple times, according to police.

Jackson collapsed in the street.

“A couple of minutes later, a passerby notified the fire department, and he was transported to a hospital where he died from his wounds,” Nolte said.

Investigators were looking for surveillance cameras on commercial and residential buildings.

The motive for the shooting was unknown, Nolte said.
