On Aug. 9, the Women, Infant and Children (WIC) program will host a back-to-school family health fair at the Compton WIC center, beginning at 10 a.m. The event will concentrate on children’s health and the importance of breastfeeding during a program led by breastfeeding peer counselor, Cheryl Cooley, and center supervisor, Reyna Flores. Dental screenings, as well as checks of blood pressure, vision and hearing will also be offered.

Students who are entering to the seventh grade can receive their mandatory t-dap shots. In addition to the health component, the Mothers Nutrition Center will be giving away fruits and vegetables, and holding cooking demonstrations.

Children can compete in a hula-hoop contest and explore the mysteries of science when they examine objects through a microscope to learn about germs.

While this event is designed to bring awareness about health and nutrition to the community, WIC will also celebrate its 40th anniversary and National Breastfeeding Awareness month. Created in 1974 WIC, was aimed at improving the health of pregnant mothers, infants and children in response to what was then a growing concern over malnutrition among many poverty-stricken mothers and youth. WIC began operating in 45 states including California. Today, the organization South Los Angeles Health Projects manages 11 WIC centers, including the Compton WIC Center.
