The nationally and critically acclaimed touring troupe, The Acting Company, will bring Hamlet to the Lancaster Performing Arts Center on Sunday, October 6, at 3 p.m. Hamlet was considered to be one of Shakespeare’s most popular works and while it ranks among one of his most-performed works, this will be the first production of Hamlet by The Acting Company in its 40-year history.

Set in the Kingdom of Denmark, the play dramatizes the revenge Prince Hamlet exacts for his father’s murder, setting him on a journey seeking his personal mortality. It vividly portrays overwhelming grief and rage while exploring themes of danger, revenge and moral corruption. Hamlet is among Shakespeare’s most powerful and influential tragedies. The exact dates are unknown, but scholars agree that Shakespeare published Hamlet between 1601 and 1603. Many believe Hamlet is the best Shakespearean work, certainly one of his most well-known and oft-quoted, and may indeed be the perfect play.

Ian Belknap, director for Hamlet, as well as The Acting Company’s Artistic Director, previously directed John Steinbeck’s “Of Mice and Men,” which was performed at the Lancaster Performing Arts Center during the 2012/2013 season. Belknap had served as the associate artistic director for The Acting Company since 2009, during that time directing “The Comedy of Errors” which premiered at the Guthrie Theater. He currently oversees The Acting Company’s celebrated educational programs – Learning Through Theater Artistic Residencies, student matinees, workshops, master classes, Primary Shakespeare and Shakespeare for Teachers – reaching more than 37,000 students yearly in more than 40 cities, particularly in disadvantaged schools where achievement levels are considerably below average.

Founded in 1972 by producer/director/actor John Houseman and current Producing Director Margot Harley, with members of the first graduating class of Julliard’s Drama Division, The Acting Company has performed 137 productions for millions of people across 48 states and 10 foreign countries. Their passion and dedication to the arts has earned the Company a TONY® Honor for Excellence in Theater as well as Obie, Audelco and Los Angeles Critics Circle awards. Established alumni members include Kevin Kline, Rainn Wilson, Patti LuPone, Cristin Milioti, Frances Conroy, Jeffrey Wright, Harriet Harris, David Ogden Stiers, Keith David, Hamish Linklater and Jesse L.
