CARSON, Calif. — The Assembly Select Committee on Human Rights, Diversity and Race Relations will hold an informational hearing entitled “Diversity in California: A Conversation About Us” at Cal State Dominguez Hills today.

The hearing, set to begin at 3 p.m., will be the first of several planned across the state to explore the impact race, bias and misconception have on a range of public policy issues, including public safety, employment, housing, education and gender equality, said committee chairman Assemblyman Isadore Hall III, D-Los Angeles.

The committee will also explore national, state and local efforts that have been successful in opening the lines of communication between people of different backgrounds to find solutions to racial and cultural conflict, Hall said.

Presentations will be made by representatives from the California Department of Justice, Los Angeles Urban League, Mexican American Legal Defense and Education Fund, Asian Americans Advancing Justice, Council on American Islamic Relations, Sikh Coalition and Equality California, Hall said.

The public can follow and provide feedback on the hearing on Twitter, using the hashtag #CADiversity, Hall said.

The hearing comes in response to President Barack Obama’s recent call for a civil dialogue on issues of race and diversity, Hall said.
