Thanksgiving food given, dinners served

The holiday season can be a trying time for the less fortunate, but there are many organizations that make a special effort to either serve meals to the needy or provide them with groceries to cook their own. Following find a list of places and organizations that will cook and serve meals or give out food.

The Los Angeles Regional Food Bank also keeps a database of organizations that host food pantries. To a find a nearby location, go to the web site— http://www.lafoodbank.org—click on find resources and put in your zip code.

Saturday, Nov. 23 First AME Church of Los Angeles, 2270 S. Harvard Blvd., Los Angeles, (323) 730-7750. Will give away groceries from 8 a.m.-noon or until food is gone. No turkeys will be available.

New Life Christian Center, 2600 S. La Brea Ave., Los Angeles, (323) 330-6099. As part of its regular food distribution (every fourth Saturday), members will give away groceries to prepare a Thanksgiving dinner beginning at 9:30 a.m.

The ROCK Christian Fellowship, 1133 Rhea St., Long Beach, (562) 597-7481, hosts its fifth annual Renewable Hope Thanksgiving Food Project and will provide free boxes of food to the public from 8 a.m.-noon or until the food is gone.

West Angeles Church of God in Christ, 3045 Crenshaw Blvd., Los Angeles. Will give away turkeys for Thanksgiving on a first come, first served basis. For details, contact the community assistant program at (323) 733-8300.

Union Rescue Mission, 545 S. San Pedro St., Los Angeles, (213) 347-6300. Will serve Thanksgiving dinner from 11 a.m.-1 p.m.

Monday, Nov. 25 The Inglewood Salvation Army Corps will set up a unique drive through setting at The Forum, 3900 W. Manchester Blvd., Inglewood; (310) 677-3375. 1,250 families in need will be able to pick up a free food box, along with a gift certificate to purchase a turkey or ham from the supermarket.

Tuesday, Nov. 26 City of Refuge, 14527 S. San Pedro St., Gardena, (310) 516-1433. A Thanksgiving meal will be served from noon-3 p.m. at the church.

Jackson Limousine, 3669 W. Slauson Blvd., Los Angeles (800) 522-9955, will conduct its annual turkey give-a-way beginning at 8 a.m.

Wednesday, Nov. 27 The Hollywood Salvation Army Corps, 5941 Hollywood Blvd., Los Angeles, (323) 960-0640, serves its annual hot Community Thanksgiving Dinner from 2-6 p.m.

The L.A. Red Shield Youth and Community Center of the Salvation Army hosts its fifth annual Community Thanksgiving Dinner beginning at 5 p.m. at the Los Angeles Convention Center, 1201 S. Figueroa St., Los Angeles. Approximately 2,000 low-income families from the Pico-Union area will be served. Volunteers are needed. For info: (213) 381-3747.

Thursday, Nov. 28 St. Bridgid Catholic Church, 5214 S. Western Ave., Los Angeles, (323) 292-0781, hosts its annual Thanksgiving feast beginning at 11:30 a.m.

Operation Warm Wishes presents its fifth annual Unity in the Community Thanksgiving Spectacular! from noon to 5 p.m. The event will feature Thanksgiving dinner with all the trimmings, guest speakers, entertainment, and much more at Pepper Tree Park in the city of Tustin. Helps the homeless, families in need, senior citizens, troubled youth, and those suffering from various illnesses.

Downtown Women’s Center, 442 S. San Pedro St., Los Angeles, (213) 680-0600, women and children only served from 7:30 a.m.-2 p.m.

The L.A. Disaster Services Canteen will be in full force Thanksgiving Day with the LA Central Corps of the Salvation Army behind the wheel. Thanksgiving meals will be distributed from 7-10 a.m. to the homeless in the streets of downtown Los Angeles. For info: (213) 896-9178.

Love and Faith Christian Center, 8505 S. Western Ave., Los Angeles (323) 753-8300, will serve a Thanksgiving meal from 11 a.m. - 1 p.m.

Nov. 28-29 Inglewood Southside Christian, 3947 W. 104th St., Inglewood, (310) 677-0446, serves dinner Thursday from noon-6 p.m. and Friday, from noon-4 p.m.
