Businessman-philanthropist Rick J. Caruso, center, and Los Angeles Police Chief Charlie Beck, left, hold $25,000 check that Caruso presented to Operation Progress to provide 10 elementary to high school students with scholarships to local private schools. The event took place last week at Verbum Dei High School in Watts. The police officers represent a team of officers that Caruso is sending to Boston to participate in the Memorial Day weekend “Run to Remember.” The LAPD team will also be taking letters of support to the family of 8-year-old Martin Richard, who was killed in an explosion at the Boston Marathon. At right is 15th District Councilman Joe Buscaino.
