Fifty-nine women were tested for HIV at the screening during the KJLH Women's Health Forum at the West Hall of the Los Angeles Convention Center on Friday, April 27. Men who attended were examined in the "Man Cave."
"... it was amazing to see the sheer number of attendees and individuals waiting in line for the various screenings from kidney to blood pressure, diabetes and HIV/AIDS," said Angela Minniefield, vice president of strategic advancement at Charles R. Drew University.
"This is a testament to why Charles R. Drew University's HIV Mobile Testing unit has had a long history of reaching beyond institutional walls and engaging directly with the community. The importance of these screenings being available in underserved communities was so apparent."
Arneta Finney, clinical coordinator and an instructor for the Mervyn M. Dymally School of Nursing, said:
"I enjoyed most how everyone was working together for one purpose, to improve the health of women. This event was not about buying, selling, or the giveaways. The event was about empowering women with education and information for you and I to live, eat healthier in your everyday live."
