Since April, hundreds of employees and volunteers from a variety of organizations and businesses have participated in the first Lancaster Corporate Challenge. The events, which began on April 6 with a 5-k run/walk and concluded last Saturday with a Chili Cook-Off, have encouraged an unprecedented level of both physical activity and networking among participating organizations.

“I am pleased to see the success of this inaugural endeavor,” said Mayor R. Rex Parris. “I have no doubt that in addition to promoting a spirit of activity and health that is certain to benefit the participants in these competitions, the networking and communication among these various organizations will certainly provide economic and social benefits to the entire region.”

The closing ceremony held Saturday announced and awarded the winners for each event, as well as the winner of the Lancaster Corporate Challenge Cup. One of the teams, the Dust Devils, took home the cup for accumulating the most points in all the events combined. The winning team for the 5-k run/walk was the Antelope Valley Union High School District. The winning team for both the softball and basketball tournaments was Antelope Valley Hospital. The winner of the bowling, golf and horseshoes tournaments as well as the Chili Cook-Off, were the Dust Devils, representing Lancaster.

The winner of the challenge’s Fit to Draw contest will be announced and recognized at the July 9 City Council meeting. The winning design is expected to appear on promotional materials for the 2014 Lancaster Corporate Challenge.
