GARDENA, Calif. — Starting Friday, safe and sane fireworks — ones that don’t fly or explode — will be allowed in Gardena through the Fourth of July, and police warned today that they would strictly enforce the law.

In a year when Southern California got about half its normal 15 inches of rain, fireworks present a significant wildfire risk.

Examples of safe and sane fireworks include sparklers, smoke bombs and fountains that shoot sparks.

More information about Gardena’s fireworks laws are posted on the city’s website.
