Lancaster is working to improve the health of Antelope Valley residents by partnering with the University of California Cooperative Extension to bring a Spanish-language nutrition program to The BLVD Farmers Market.

The city will host the free Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program (EFNEP) workshop “Fruits and Vegetables . . . Half Your Plate,” on Thursday, June 20, at 4 and 6 p.m. in the Museum of Art and History (MOAH), Hernando and Fran Marroquin Family classroom.

Through an experiential learning process, workshop participants, 12 years and older, will learn to make food choices which can improve the nutritional quality of the meals they serve. Participants will also learn how they can increase their ability to select and buy food that meets the nutritional needs of their family, while utilizing The BLVD Farmers market vendors as a resource.

The EFNEP is a program of the United States Department of Agriculture which operates in all 50 states and U.S. territories. The program is administered in California by the University of California Cooperative Extension. It assists limited-resource audiences with acquiring the knowledge, skills, attitudes, and behaviors necessary for nutritionally sound diets, to contribute to their personal development and improve the total family diet and nutritional well-being.

The free EFNEP workshops are sponsored locally by the Antelope Valley 4-H.

The Lancaster Museum of Art and History (MOAH) is located at 665 W. Lancaster Blvd.

While the free workshops are walk-in friendly, advance registration is encouraged. Register online www.cityoflancasterca.org/recreation; call the city’s Parks, Recreation and Arts Department at (661) 723-6077, or visit in person at 44933 Fern Ave. City hall hours are 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Thursday, and 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday.
