Chrysler Group has worked out an agreement with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) over the recall of the 1993-2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee and the 2002-07 Jeep Liberty.
NHTSA had wanted the automaker to recall these models because of the possibility that a rear-situated gas tank would burst into flames in a low-speed, rear-end crash.
Chrysler maintains that its analysis of the data confirms that these vehicles “are not defective and are among the safest in the peer group.”
Going on, the company writes in a statement: “Chrysler Group recognizes that this matter has raised concerns for its customers and wants to take further steps, in coordination with NHTSA, to provide additional measures to supplement the safety of its vehicles.”
The company has agreed to conduct a voluntary safety recall campaign where customers will receive a letter inviting them to go to their dealership the vehicles into a dealership for a visual inspection, and if necessary an upgrade to the rear structure of the vehicle to better manage crash forces in low-speed impacts. The upgrade is the addition of a trailer hitch.
