LANCASTER, Calif. — A psychologist working at California State Prison, Los Angeles County in Lancaster was injured during an attack by an inmate today, authorities said.

The psychologist, whose name was not released, was making rounds in the institution’s housing facilities about 8:30 a.m. when she was attacked by an inmate who repeatedly punched her in the face, according to Jackie Galapon, a spokeswoman for the facility, sometimes known as the Lancaster State Prison.

The psychologist was treated for injuries to her head, a broken nose and hemorrhaging behind her left eye. An officer sent to subdue the inmate sustained injuries to her leg and hand. Another officer sustained cuts and bruises to his right hand, Galapon said.

Jacob Marquez, the 37-year-old inmate suspected of attacking the psychologist, was subdued and taken to the Administrative Segregation Unit, Galapon said.

Marquez is serving a 20-year sentence for second-degree robbery. Prison authorities turned the matter over to the District Attorney’s Office for prosecution, Galapon said.
